I just bought an iPhone 6 Plus. I was pretty stoked on it until they announced the iPhone 6S Plus a few days after my return period ended. Apple, man. You just can’t win.

Anyways, I’ve gone over my paltry 3 GB data allowance *every single month* for a couple months now. After a few months of owning my new phone, I got this text message:

Did you get this text message?Did you get this text message?

AT&T Free Msg: As a thank you, we’ve automatically doubled the data on your 3GB Mobile Share Value plan – you don’t have to do a thing. You will keep this extra data until the end of 2017 as long as you stay on this new plan. View your account anytime at att.com/myatt

What? AT&T doing something nice? For free? I don’t understand! I called them to see what was going on, and they confirmed that the change to my account was permanent.

Any ideas on what’s going on? I can only assume that Verizon, T-Mobile, or some other company is about to announce some jaw-droppingly awesome plan, and AT&T is trying to retain customers.
